Ancient world and nature inspire talented jeweller

Jeweller Naomi Tracz is fascinated by the ancient world and enchanted by small shapes in nature.

The mother of two has turned her hobby into a business, creating stunning jewellery out of a small workshop in Stoke Newington and selling via an Etsy shop, her own website, at markets and in the shop at the British Museum.

She’s the latest business to join the Local Buyers Club, with a 15% discount to members. (Info here)

She said: “I started jewellery making as a hobby 10 years ago and took City and Guilds evening classes. After my daughter’s first birthday when I had a little more time, I decided to make it a business.

“I get inspiration from the jewellery of the ancient world; Roman, Etruscan and Sumerian jewellery and am often researching in the British Museum. I’m also inspired by the small shapes in plants and leaves and make them a focus of each piece.”

Working mainly with silver and gold and semi-precious gems, Naomi is drawn to stones with interesting colours and inclusions – rather than flawless ‘perfect’ stones.

She visits local parks and is a regular at Kew Gardens. “Even in London, nature is all around you all the time,” she added.

“Running your own business can be quite lonely at times. In some ways I relish being on my own and having the space to just get on with it but towards the end of the day I start going crazy! I’ve started going back to City Lit to do a workshop for advanced and intermediate jewellery-makers. There’s always something new to learn and it’s good to meet with other jewellers to share ideas and learn from one another.”

Before this she worked as a photographer and for Web of Stories (making short films about older people who’ve achieved something remarkable).

She’s planning to sell at the Desire Jewellery Market in Chelsea on March 17 and at the Made craft fair in Canary Wharf at the end of March.

She said: “I always get a bit nervous before doing a market – as long as it’s busy and people are nice it’s good fun!”
