Extinction Rebellion is coming to East London with a mass protest from July 12 to 14.
The uprising, which is expected to draw large crowds, will include play, protest, and education and aims to raise awareness of the world's climate and ecological crisis and will include families, residents and climate activists from across East London.
The activity will focus around Hackney Central and London Fields and include arts, textile printing, music, talks, workshops, food sharing, guerrilla gardening, non-violent direct action, and People’s Assemblies. Organisers hope to unite participants in peaceful protest, create a shared vision of a greener East London, and put pressure on the government to act to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2025.

One of the sites of the Uprising will be the ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’ – a large piece of government-owned land on Graham Road which had been abandoned for five years and which East London members of Extinction Rebellion have spent weeks transforming from a derelict wasteland to a greener space with flowerbeds and vegetables growing, artwork and a stage.
Sorrel Carmichael, 28, is a local member of Extinction Rebellion and among those putting herself forward as an ‘arrestable’ at the event, i.e. a person willing to be arrested in the course of their protest.
She said: “I’ve never been an activist before, but this is very close to my heart. I’m protesting because I’m aware of the truth and I know how serious the situation is. If everybody knew they’d all be on the streets.”
The group is writing to local businesses, working with community groups, and ensuring activities such as local sports aren’t disrupted.
Extinction Rebellion has three main demands:
1. Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.
2. Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
3. Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
