Islington Giving & Local Buyers Club: Boosting good causes & local business

Islington Giving and Local Buyers Club

Two organisations dedicated to making life better in Islington have teamed up.

The Local Buyers Club, a discount card promoting independent businesses, is working closely with Islington Giving, an organisation helping those experiencing poverty, mental illness or isolation.

For every new member who joins the Local Buyers Club with the code ISGIVE, they’ll donate £5 to Islington Giving to support local good causes. (Info here)

Basil Fansa, founder of the Local Buyers Club, said: “We’ve long been admirers of Islington Giving and the tremendous difference they make locally, and we’re delighted to be supporting their amazing work. Many of our businesses are determined to help the communities they serve and, in addition to donating a share of our revenue, we’re planning some exciting events and marketing that will both generate business for local traders and promote and fundraise for Islington Giving.”

Each year Islington Giving delivers around £1 million worth of grants to grassroots organisations which help people experiencing poverty, families and young people and those who feel isolated. They’ve helped over 20,000 people since 2010.

38% of children in Islington live in poverty. The area has less green space than any other London borough, the worst rate of depression in the capital and life expectancy for poorer residents is up to eight years shorter than richer residents.

Anne Phipps of Islington Giving said: “We know how important independent trade is to the local economy; when you shop locally more of the money you spend makes it back into communities; that in turn creates employment, reduces poverty and isolation. So there’s a great synergy between the projects we fund and the problems the Local Buyers Club has been established to tackle. We’re thrilled to be teaming up, raising funds and making sure people know about the brilliant work happening to make life better locally.”

Membership of the Local Buyers Club usually costs £12 per year and members are rewarded with discounts of 10-25% at more than 150 local businesses.
