Hackney Halloween fundraiser catches on Down Under!

A Halloween Trick or Eat campaign to collect food for people in poverty is taking place on both sides of the world!

When mother-of-three Jo Barr read about The Local Buyers Club’s Trick or Eat campaign for Hackney Foodbank, she loved the idea so much that she decided to run the initiative in her home town of Barwon Heads, Australia (in aid of Geelong Food Relief Centre).

Jenna Fansa, of the Local Buyers Club, said: “It’s lovely to think that Trick or Eat has caught on in Australia – as we’re pounding the streets giving out posters in a busy city, Jo is putting matching posters up by the beach! We’ve shared artwork and organising tips and it’s wonderful to know that our small campaign has had such reach.”

Last year Trick or Eat collected more than 1,200 meals for people in poverty in Hackney – the scheme involves residents putting collection boxes outside their homes on Halloween and asking friends and neighbours to donate non-perishable food. This year more than 50 streets in Hackney are taking part alongside several streets in Barwon Heads.

Jo, who used to live in Hackney, came across the idea after spotting a post on Facebook. She added: “Halloween is a big deal here but, as in Hackney, Coronavirus means many people are concerned about trick or treating. Trick or Eat offers a chance to turn Halloween on its head – dressing up and donating food instead of asking for it!”

The Local Buyers Club is also donating £5 to Hackney Foodbank for every new member who joins with the code TRICKOREAT before November 10 this year. Join now.
