Zero Waste Week: The London indies helping you switch out plastic
It’s Zero Waste Week and, while yet another national week of something usually generates a fair amount of eye-rolling in the LBC office, this one we’re keen to get behind.
Ditching the plastic is getting easier by the day – with businesses like Circla, Top up Truck, Re:Store, Greener Habits and The People’s Pantry delivering to your door and offering savings to Local Buyers Club members.
A recent study by Science Advances suggests that 91% of the world's plastic waste to date has never been recycled. Around 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in our oceans every year which is bad for marine life and bad for our health.

This Islington-based firm delivers refillable plastic-free products to your door, from soap and shampoo to cleaning products for the home. When you’ve emptied them – let them know, leave your empty bottles outside the door and they’ll bring a refill. Every order is delivered by bike or electric vehicle. They’re currently delivering to Zones 1 and 2.

Operating from old electric milk floats these fab businesses bring plastic-free shopping to your street. Simply bring your clean and empty containers outside and stock up on a range of zero-waste products from cereal, pasta and pulses and snacks to cleaning and bathroom products. Book ahead!

If you can’t pop in to this zero-waste shop in Hackney Downs, fear not! They deliver by electric cargo bike within 5km of the shop. They offer food, cleaning and bathroom products and much more. Food is delivered in paper bags and liquids in glass bottles, which you can return for a £1 refund.

This zero waste and vegan shop in Walthamstow delivers UK wide and offer affordable eco-friendly products. They choose planet, people and animals over profit, offering a huge range of package-free food products such as pasta, rice, beans, lentils, herbs and spices. DabbaDrop delivers delicious vegan curries by bicycle to your door in reusable ‘dabba’ tins so there’s no waste. Set up by Hackney friends Renee and Anshu, this gorgeous local company serves bold, bright, wholesome food that’s packed with flavour and ready to heat. Anshu, whose family come from Mumbai, uses her mum’s recipes for inspiration.

If the sight of cucumbers wrapped in plastics and veggies drenched in pesticides sends your blood pressure soaring, ditch the supermarket and head for Growing Communities. Their fruit and vegetables are organic and seasonal and farmers are paid a fair price. While they're not completely plastic-free, they do their best to minimise packaging.

This Crouch End business stocks foods which are local, sustainable and largely plastic-free and they deliver within a 3 mile radius. As well as gorgeous locally-made cheeses and meat cured nearby, there’s a good selection of plant-based, vegetarian options, plus lots of store cupboard essentials, locally-baked bread, English wines and spirits, and an organic veg box.
