Talented chef cooking for a charity close to her heart

Nima Owino

A popular West African chef hailed one “to look out for” by the Guardian, will be cooking up a storm at this week’s Street Child Summer Party.

Nima Owino, who runs the Nim’s Din Supper Club, will be serving up a two-course meal to revellers at the Pillbox Kitchen in Bethnal Green on Thursday June 28. (Info/ tickets: www.street-child.co.uk/sl-summer-party)

The event is a chance to learn more about the Sierra Leone Marathon and the projects it funds, to meet past runners, see photos and film of this year’s event and to sign up for next year.

Street Child, which builds schools and promotes education in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria and Nepal, is a charity particularly close to Nima’s heart. Raised in London, her family come from Sierra Leone and Liberia and she comes from a long line of educators.

“My maternal Grandma was from Sierra Leone and her father, my great grandfather, was once the Minister for Education in Sierra Leone and built a school in Moriba Town near Sierra Rutile, which is still educating pupils today. My Grandma and Grandpa saw the great importance in education and schooling for children, especially with my Grandpa being a professor at The University of Liberia, they ensured all their children went to school.”

Nima’s mother and sister are also teachers and, when she’s not cooking, Nima works for a business school. She hopes one day to run cookery classes for children.

She added: “I admire all the work that Street Child do in both Sierra Leone and Liberia, as they look to empower children through education. I was excited to be asked to work with them again and do another supper club to aid in raising funds and celebrate all the work that has taken place over the last year.”

Thursday’s menu includes Pepper Chicken with Jacato Babaganoush, Spicy Mango and Gari Salad, Cassava Chips with Aioli and Hibiscus, Lemon and Ginger Cake.

Tickets cost £22.50 and include a welcome drink, two-course meal, a discount for the 2019 marathon and the chance to view a photo exhibition of this and previous years’ marathons.

Runners are currently training for Street Child’s Craft Half Marathon and 10km race, which takes place on September 2 at Lee Valley. Participants will be treated to craft beer every two miles.
