6 fabulous pubs at the heart of their communities

When we’re out and about choosing which business we’d like as part of the Local Buyers Club, we mostly think with our stomachs!

And conveniently, while following the trail of good food, we’ve stumbled across some wonderful local pubs and bagged brilliant discounts for members there.

North and East London is full of fabulous, historic pubs which play a huge role in community life. Our favourites include:

1. The Queens, Crouch End

This Victorian gastro pub is Crouch End’s finest – built in 1898 it’s steeped in history and has stunning art nouveau stained glass windows. It’s hugely popular and for good reason.

Local Buyers Club members save 10% off food and drink there Monday-Friday.

2. The Prince, Stoke Newington

This place in a residential Stokey street is buzzing, there’s often live music and the food is superb. The team behind this community pub work with a wide range of independent and local brewers and suppliers.

3. The Cat & Mutton, Broadway Market

This sizeable pub is a focal point of Broadway Market and has been welcoming customers for 300 years. It’s charmingly done-out, serves hearty pub grub, has 16 beers on tap and a fabulous cocktail list and is always buzzing. There’s jazz on Mondays, a quiz on Tuesdays and DJs on Fridays and Saturdays till 1am.

4. The Red Lion, Stoke Newington

This place is under new ownership and they’re a lovely bunch. There’s been a Red Lion on Church Street since the 1800s and, with its village feel and horses and carts parked outside it looked drastically different! But the pub was rebuilt in 1924 due to street widening.

Today’s Red Lion serves awesome pizza and craft beers, plays big-screen sport and is open till 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.

5. The Horatia, Holloway Road

Named after the lovechild of Lady Hamilton and Vice Admiral Nelson, this 300 capacity boozer offers more than 60 craft beers and serves food by the legendary Stokey Bears. It’s hugely popular, particularly on match days and has a 1am licence and a big screen showing Sky sports.e 1

6. The Clarence Tavern

This Grade II Listed pub opened in 1860 and recently reverted back to its original name, having been The Daniel Defoe and then Stoke Newington Tea House.

The team behind it have a brilliant approach to community and charity, with job titles including: Head of Random Acts of Kindness.

The menu includes options for breakfast, lunch and dinner such as British Tapas and delicious Sunday roasts. There’s a good-sized garden and the pub itself has been beautifully renovated.
